Nonprofit Organizations in Colorado Springs: Addressing Education and Literacy Issues

Break the Silence LLC, American Numismatic Association, BSCS Science Learning, International Students Inc, VISIONTRUST INTERNATIONAL INC, and Space Foundation are just a few of the nonprofit organizations in Colorado Springs that are devoted to tackling education and literacy issues. I first became involved with CASA in 2003 when I attended their Light of Hope event. The Colorado Youth Congress works to create systems change in the areas of racial justice and mental health by engaging high school students from urban, suburban, and rural communities across the state. RIHEL is a non-profit organization that strives to develop and connect leaders who collaborate in diverse sectors and communities to promote health and well-being. The CPHA is a 501 v3 not-for-profit association that has been around since 1938 and represents Colorado's statewide network of current and emerging public health professionals, organizations, and companies. The Active Schools Laboratory at Northern Colorado University is committed to creating active learning environments for all Colorado youth through data-based processes and leadership development in school-wide physical activity programming.

CASBHC is a not-for-profit organization that supports existing and emerging school health centers by providing policies, training and technical assistance, and quality improvement projects. The CDE School Schools Unit works to support high-quality educational options for Colorado families and students while promoting innovations that will prepare Colorado students for the 21st century. The Colorado School Health Alliance (Alliance) is a collaboration of nine education and healthcare organizations. The Recovery Summer Coalition is made up of Colorado organizations that work for children through direct programs or specific actions and promotion. The Consortium is a not-for-profit organization that partners with Colorado school districts to ensure the successful implementation of the Medicaid School Health Services Program (SHS).

The Keep Moving grant has brought together physical activity leaders from northeastern BOCES to share ideas and resources. Recent data shows that 1 in 5 Colorado high school students (17%) reported that they were seriously considering suicide over the course of a school year. The Colorado Charter Schools League (The League) is a not-for-profit membership organization that supports the state's charter schools. The Central School District serves youth and families in the Centro community in southern Colorado, in the San Luis Valley.
